You made a lot of good points here. It reminded me of a video I watched that described the “centaur” era of chess, which occurred in between the time in any grandmaster could beat any computer and our current era, where the opposite is true. In the centaur era, a grandmaster who had a computer program and could overrule its suggested moves was superior to any grandmaster or any computer program working in isolation.

It sounds like you think LLMs could take research and recursive improvement into a centaur era (I agree), and then the real question is whether the human researcher eventually becomes irrelevant (we don’t know but I hope not)
